Why the Pennsylvania iLottery Matters

Amidst all the buzz that has been generated by the rapid spread of sports betting, and to some degree, the increase in online gambling in the United States, the proliferation of the online lottery has been somehow downplayed. Late last month, Pennsylvania joined the few other states who offer the gambling vertical and even though the launch itself was rather subtle and the initial rollout of games underwhelming, it still marked a great step forward for the state following the state’s quest for expanded gaming that was officiated last October.

Available data has shown that if it is run well, the Pennsylvania iLottery has the potential of becoming a huge financial resource for the state’s reinvestment programs. In fact, the iLottery may even pay greater dividends to the Keystone State than any of the other more glamorous and hyped gambling expansion vehicles such as online gambling and sports betting.

As it stands, the PA iLottery is still at its launch stage, and it should begin taking advantage of the hype that comes with the launch period to make the most out of the inbuilt advantages that the market offers. For one, the state boasts of a resident population of nearly 13 million with the lottery players spending much more on lotto tickets. The only state that comes even close to these numbers is Michigan. Secondly, under the state’s laws, out-of-state residents are allowed to sign up for and play real-money games at the PA iLottery – the only condition is that they have to be geo-located in the state. This only happens in Pennsylvania.

Summing up the statistics from all these inbuilt advantages, the PA iLottery industry could easily rake in over $150 million every year once it matures fully. This will be a huge win for the state as the bulk of the fund could be channeled towards programs to assist the elderly members of the state.
